Gustav Metzger
Gustav Metzger's - Liquid Crystal Environment
A room filled with "liquid crystal" projections, constantly moving through the colours, with cushions on the floor so you can sit and soak up the atmosphere of this beautiful installation. You become a part of it, and are crucial to the experience of the work. I love this...

Oh, wouldn't it be nice to be James Turrell??
James Turrell is a huge influence for my current project, i love his work, it is what it is, no frills.. His material is light and space.... which is fast becoming the basis for my research... The things i'm discovering during my research are really exciting me.

Light Box
I call this the magic cube, it's mesmerizing to watch. In a darkened room I let this be my only light source, and it is beautiful, it almost feels alive..

Pipilotti Rist
"Walls liquefy and wash over the people like a psychic Jacuzzi, in order to set them afloat." - Pipilotti Rist
This work has shown me that beauty is sensation, and to experience it is bliss.

Rudolf Stingel
Rudolf Stingel - installation view
This looks beautiful, and i love the idea of interaction here between the viewer and the installation. Not only are we asked to enjoy this work with our eyes, the audience in the gallery space are encouraged to deface the walls, in whatever way they wish, using anything they may have on them - pens, coins, credit cards etc. And I must say this aggressive act gives off the opposite effect, in fact I think the space looks gorgeous, really elegant. I love this work a lot.

Emily Jacir
For Emily Jacir's 'From Texas With Love' 2002, she asked Palestinians what music they would choose if they could drive non stop across their country for one hour. She compiled their suggestions on a soundtrack, and played it during an uninterupted journey across Texas. The resulting film is a view through the car's windscreen accompanied by Jacir's compilation. I loved this piece at GOMA, (i think it might still be there, top floor) I thought it was really lovely to use music within her piece, and the piece actually allows the viewer to choose what song they would like to hear while watching the film.. I felt overwhelming freedom within this work, it was really thought provoking, and for those moments i sat there, engaged in the film and the music, i was content, and I was grateful.

plaid - dett
sweetest wee chill out i've heard in a long time.. some really happy sounds, makes me smile every time :)
play this track and then scroll down to the lava lamp video and play that simultaneously (with it's volume turned right down) so you listen to this tune while watching the lava lamp video, they work quite well together..
jim lambieeeee!!!!
Jim Lambie's new work, Metal Urbain, at The Modern Institute is so frrrrrickin exquisite!! I've been three times so far, definitely one of my favourites at Glasgow International.. And the new Modern Institute space is beautiful too, well worth a visit. Lambie's work just gets better and better. I feel like this exhibition space should be used to hold a wee chilled out rave on a sunny afternoon or something, its such a happy space, and with a bit of bouncy techno and some happy people, it would be a delight :)

Olafur Eliasson - The Weather Project
Olafur Eliasson's 'The Weather Project' at the Tate Modern...
So much of the work I am now looking at is making me want to create some sort of new experience, a new sensation that encompasses beauty and pleasure, and has a hold on the viewer.. Something sort of hypnotic, that could potentially put us in a dream-like state. How I'm gonna pull this one off i've no idea! Thank god we still have a few weeks to figure it out!

ernesto neto - yummy
Ernesto Neto is possibly my favourite artist of all time... And I am still yet to experience the delights of his sculpture installations! I can imagine his work taking me somewhere I have never been before, full of exploration and sensation. Neto's installations offer an overwhelming adventure for the human senses - visually fantastic pieces that you are able to explore, touch, walk on, roll on, lie on, rub yourself against or whatever. I really hope he exhibits in the UK sometime soon. He also uses spices/herbs in his works which allow you to open up more than just your eyes to his work. I can only imagine what it must be like to be in these vast spaces alongside his work... I could quite happily post a hundred images of neto's work on here, but i won't.. Here are some of my favourites, enjoy.

long live the king...
I'm thinking a lot about anish kapoor, or rather, the work of anish kapoor. He's a bit too old for me you see... His work is a lot about experience, the experience between the viewer and the work, and this is something I am hoping to look into a lot more throughout my research.

siobhan hapaska
Far - 1994
The first artist who came to mind was Siobhan Hapaska who spoke at a Friday Event last year. Even though she wasn't so keen on her earlier sculptures, because she felt all they spoke about was form, material, surface, I couldn't help but love these. I love their pearlescent quality, and have made me think of using the beautiful finish of such a small, delicate object but on a really large scale, so as to become something quite un-natural, and intriguing..

can beauty be a sensation?
After having used pearls for our last project, i seem to have gained an endless fascination with their beauty and the symbolic meanings associated with them. In Greek mythology, the pearl is linked to Aphrodite, who is the Goddess of Love, Beauty and Sexuality, which has led me think about the relationship between love and beauty, things which, in my opinion, are dependent on one another. But what is the difference between love and beauty? I see beautiful things all the time, yet it doesn't mean I love them, so for us to truly love, we must be able to see the beauty within - something which contradicts that good old saying that, 'beauty is skin deep.' Love is an experience, a sensation, something we feel, so what is this beauty that we speak of? What I want to understand is if it is possible to make beauty a sensation? Something we feel? Is it possible to create a piece of work so beautiful, that it alters our state of mind, that could potentially take us somewhere within our body and mind that is as strong as the sensation of love? This sounds ambitious, if a little crazy, but I like a challenge :)
